NASA delays Launch of Atlantis due to Storms

NASA has delayed the launch of space shuttle Atlantis by two days, because of tropical storms. NASA announced it on Friday, one day after moving Atlantis to the launch pad. Now, Atlantis is scheduled for a take off on October 10.

Through Atlantis, NASA plans to dispatch a crew of seven astronauts to install new science instruments, fix broken equipment and replace batteries and gyroscopes on the Hubble Space Telescope. This will be the final mission to service the 18-year-old observatory.
Even if NASA has to move Atlantis off the launch pad because of Hurricane Ike, a monstrous storm looming out in the Atlantic, the Hubble mission still should remain on track, NASA officials said.
Now, Space shuttle Endeavour is looking at a November 12 liftoff. Endeavour will serve as the rescue ship in case Atlantis suffers irreparable damage during liftoff. So, NASA wants Endeavour on the launch pad, ready to go, before Atlantis takes off.
