World Record by Planting 284,000 Saplings

In an unique attempt to create a world record and contribute to the environment, people of remote Chautaki village of lower Assam planted 284,000 saplings in a single day. It is perhaps the fastest go-green campaign in the world for the saplings had been planted in twenty-four hours. The previous record was in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district where they planted 2.54 lakh.

The record attempt was started on the afternoon of July 11 and continued till next day, during which a record 284,000 saplings were planted by the villagers with the help og government officials and NGO workers. During the plantation drive, was carried out under ENREGA project (Govt Project) at a cost of rupees 3.4 million, saplings of various plants like guava, teak, neem, were planted in 31.5 hectares of land. Around 300 people including government officials, NGO workers and residents of Chautaki Village worked together to create the world record in planting maximum number of saplings within 24 hrs.

“We created a new world record by planting 2.84 lakh and 236 saplings in 24 hours by 300 people,” said M S Manivannan, SDO, North Salmara, who was inspired by the story of how a natural wall of 80,000 trees saved Naluvebapatty the only village in Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu to survive the tsunami of 2004.

During the plantation drive, Surajeet Baruah, an independent observer from World Wildlife Fund (WWF) was also present to see that the whole exercise was done meticulously according to the guidelines set by the World Heritage Committee.
