Two Bomb Blasts in Assam

At least 20 people were injured, in two separate bomb blasts on Saturday in the state of Assam. Police blamed both blasts on the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), a rebel group that has been fighting for an independent homeland in Assam since 1979.

First, a low intensity bomb exploded in Guwahati city of Assam. The bomb was planted “beneath a parked truck in Fancy Bazar, the main commercial hub of the northeastern region. It went off at around 1.30 pm causing injuries to four persons.

Then, after half an hour, a powerful bomb exploded in Tinsukia town, about 520 kilometres (200 miles) from Guwahati. The bomb was kept in a sack and strapped to a parked bicycle near a busy commercial area. It injured 16 people, six of them seriously.

A 2.5 kg bomb was recovered from a bicycle at Tangni Bazar, under Dhula police station in Darrang district at around 11.30 am. The bomb was later defused by experts of the army and CRPF.
