12 Killed in Bus accident near Guwahati

At least 12 people have been killed and eight missing and presumed dead, in a tragic bus accident in Assam. The occured when the bus coming from Silapathar in Dhemaji district to Guwahati City fell into a pond near Sonapur, when the bus drive lost control while crossing a bridge.

Kamrup Sub-Divisional Officer C K Bhuyan, supervising the rescue operations, said the bus carrying 22 people, including 18 passengers. The helper Amal Das, who managed to swim ashore despite sustaining serious injuries, said there were no women or children in the bus.

People from nearby villages rushed to the spot and fished out 12 dead bodies. Now CRPF and army personnel have launched a search operation with the help of boats and army divers to find the bodies of the remaining persons.

The Assam government has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 1 lakh to the relatives of those deceased. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has directed the district administration to institute a magisterial inquiry into the incident. The bus was owned by the Guwahati-based Green Valley Travels, announced a compensation of Rs 10,000 for the relatives of the deceased.

The victims who have been identified so far are Ripunath Taye, Pradip Konwar, Sushil Ranjan Ghosh, Binod Baidya, Uttam Jain, Bikash Baishya, Indra Chakrabarty, Jyoti Saikia and Bishnu Nath Tai.

Who is responsible for this tragic accident? Due to the ongoing expansion work of National Highway 37, most part of the highway is deadly now. There are lots of small bridges without railings. And the condition of road is pathetic. Now, who is going to claim the responsibilities?
