Free Treatment of Cancer in Assam

To boost the fight against Cancer, the Assam government has decided to treat cancer patients for free starting from March 1, 2008. Incidents of cancer in the North East is highest in India. Every year there are over 5,000 new cancer cases in Assam. And there is only one cancer institute in the entire region - Dr. B Barooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), Guwahati.

Cancer can be treated with surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of all three. Chemotherapy courses range from Rs 3,000 to over a lakh per course. Many people can’t afford this. So, Govt of Assam has decided to give a helping hand!

”The government has decided to give chemotherapy doses completely free of cost, whatever the cost may be, effective from March 1. We have the state revenue support and we have to spend Rs 10-15 crore every year for this as of now. So we have got the fund from the state budgetary support,” said Himanta Biswa Sarmah, Minister Health and Family Welfare.
