IGNOU Programme for Jail inmates

Dr Vardhini Bhattacharjee, Regional Director IGNOU, Guwahati stated that the university had established a study centre at the jail in the year 2000. Traditional general education programms did not pick up in the jail in the past few years. It is from this experience that the university in now keen on activating skill based training programs which would make the inmates competent to particiapte in society.
Kajal Saha, Project Manager TRTC, Amingaon highlighted the variety of training programms available at his institution and stated that the TRTC would actively provide expertise for IGNOU. Dr Jayashree Kurup, Deputy Director, North East unit IGNOU appreciated the inmates for participating in the programme and encouraged them to identifythe variety of competencies they would like to acquire. This was followed by a brief introduction of the inmates who expressed enthusiasm to undergo the training.
Inaugurating the programme at the jail premises, Pro Vice Chancellor of the University Prof O P Mishra pointed out that the University is interested to open up vistas of development for the inmates so that, when they emerge into the real world they would be able to lead life as constructive citizens. He emphasised that knowledge gain is permanent and the inmates should use such opportunities which will enrich them.
